Cory Arcangel: 'a couple thousand short films about Glenn Gould'

7 December 2007- 26 January 2008
Preview: Thursday 6 December 2007 6:00 - 8:00pm

New York-based artist Cory Arcangel's newly commissioned two-screen installation
'a couple thousand short films about Glenn Gould' rescores Johann Sebastian Bach's famous 1741 composition the 'Goldberg Variations'.

To produce 'a couple thousand short films about Glenn Gould', Arcangel has spliced together nearly 2000 clips of amateur musicians' performances taken from video sharing web sites such as YouTube. Each note of the score jumps between individual clips of different musicians, with each screen carrying a separate melody line. The final effect is an almost  hallucinatory montage - a flood of images which we are engulfed into. Arcangel allows anonymous guitarists, keyboard players, tuba players and other enthusiasts from around the world to unintentionally collaborate in recreating Bach's masterpiece.

Alongside, Arcangel will reveal other new works, and some of the works which propelled him to international recognition. These include 'I Shot Andy Warhol', a reprogrammed Nintendo console, which mixes the computer game fantasy with real-life tragedy, where the user has to avoid pixilated sprites of the Pope and Flavor Flav from the group Public Enemy.

The piece has been specially commissioned by Film and Video Umbrella in collaboration with Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, Spacex Gallery, Exeter and Castlefield Gallery, Manchester. The work is showing concurrently at Spacex Gallery, Exeter,
 from 15 December 2007 - 23 February 2008.

Cory Arcangel is represented by Max Wigram Gallery and the exhibition 'Request for Comments' runs at the gallery's Ridley Road space until 16 December 2007.
