Families

Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art welcomes families into the galleries. We offer a range of events designed for all members of the family, parents, carers and children.  These include free activities during school holidays, a drop-in activity space and activity sheets for the exhibitions.

Budding artists can make their own artworks to be displayed in The Drawing Room, find out more about what's on in the gallery, or enjoy the exhibitions.  With free materials, family activities, gallery tours and inspiring exhibitions, there is always something for families to see or do at NGCA.

FAMILY FAQs

Do you have baby changing facilities?

Baby changing facilities are available on the second floor of the building, in the children's area of the library.

How do I get to the gallery?

The nearest car parks are at the civic centre on Burdon Road. NGCA is opposite Sunderland train and metro station.  Once you are in the City Library and Arts Centre you can take the escalators or lift to the 3rd Floor.

How can I find out about family activities?

We publicise our family events through print and on our website, Facebook page and Twitter.  If you would like to receive e-mails about upcoming events for families, please sign up to our mailing list here.

Are the exhibitions suitable for children?

The majority of the artwork in our galleries is for all ages to enjoy.  Occasionally there may be work which is unsuitable for young children; if this is the case we will put a sign in the gallery advising parents and carers to check the work first.

What else is there for families to do?

NGCA is located in the same building as Sunderland City Library so why not combine a visit to NGCA with a trip to the library?  There is a children's section and a large range of books for children and young people of all ages.

City Library also hold weekly Time for Rhyme sessions on Wednesday mornings at 10am and Story Time every Tuesday at 11am. All sessions are free. Contact the enquiry desk on 0191 561 1235 or email: enquiry.desk@sunderland.gov.uk

Is there a café onsite?

We don't have a café but there are a number of cafes nearby, including Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens which is opposite the NGCA.
