Helen Sweeting's playful, dramatic and moving photographs are inspired by the stories of Sunderland residents. The latest of a series of photographers to have undertaken residencies through the University of Sunderland, Sweeting's work presents an engaging portrait of a city seen vicariously through the memories of the people who live there.
'A Penny For Your Thoughts' is the culmination of three months of research in Sunderland, where Sweeting interviewed two dozen individuals to record their most treasured memories connected to places in the city. From these, she selected six of the most evocative stories, and recreated them through photography. These powerful images communicate an extraordinary sense of place; from photographs that focus on the dramatic North East coastline to others which use the residents own possessions to create quirkily beautiful scenarios. The resulting photographs reveal both the best-known sights of the city and coastline as well as those aspects which most often go un-noticed, in an entirely new light.
